steenth

PRONUNCIATION:
(steenth)

MEANING:
adjective:
1. Latest in an indefinitely long sequence.
2. One sixteenth.

ETYMOLOGY:
Alteration of the word sixteenth.

NOTES:
The formation of the word "steenth" from "sixteenth" took place through a process called aphesis (from Greek, literally "a letting go"). Aphesis occurs when an unstressed sound from the beginning of a word gets lost over time. Some other examples are:
"cute" from "acute"
"'tis" from "it is"
"gypsy" from "Egyptian", from the belief that Gypsies came from Egypt (they actually came from India).

USAGE:
"And for the steenth time I wondered why he hadn't phoned me."
Robert A. Heinlein; The Cat Who Walks Through Walls; Putnam Publishing; 1985.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
The highest result of education is tolerance. -Helen Keller, author and lecturer (1880-1968)

Women still don't make time for ourselves' We've gained an
"extra" hour this week. Use that as a reminder to make time
for yourself this autumn, to do things for yourself, and for
your soul. And, just as importantly, never feel guilty about it.

cozen

PRONUNCIATION:
(KUHZ-uhn)

MEANING:
verb tr.: To trick or deceive.

ETYMOLOGY:
The origin of the word is not certain. It is perhaps from French cousiner, in the sense of one claiming to be a cousin to derive a benefit from the relationship. According to another theory, it is derived from obsolete Italian cozzonare, from Italian cozzone (horse trader), from Latin cocio (dealer). The word cousin is also slang for someone gullible.

USAGE:
"Hobart began his career in art by cozening yokels out of unregarded treasures."
Rhoda Koenig; Kicking A Dead Horse; The Independent (London, UK); Sep 12, 2008.
